Why Action is Necessary

Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedures and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes.  Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are necessary to appropriate LETF funds.

Provides LETF funding in the amount of $1,256,342 to support the Forfeiture Unit for Fiscal Year 2023.

A. The Broward Sheriff’s Office supports this LETF request for $1,256,342 to fund the Broward County Forfeiture Unit. Funding for this program is shared by local forfeiture and the Federal Justice Law Enforcement Trust Fund.

Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for these actions.  According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of October 28, 2022, is $3,951,652 in the local account ($3,115,609 of which is unrestricted) and $3,960,748 in the federal account ($2,322,223 of which is unrestricted).  These actions will utilize $962,672 in unrestricted local funds and $293,670 in unrestricted federal funds.
