Summary Explanation/Background

This item supports the Commission's Value, "Values Differences: Recognizing the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to an organization," and supports the Commission's Goal, "Healthy Community: Cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning." This item also advances the Libraries Division's mission of providing convenient access to a full range of innovative and cost-effective services that satisfy the changing needs of the people of Broward County for information, education, and recreation.

On November 18, 2022, the Urban Libraries Council ("ULC") published its Declaration of Democracy ("Declaration") (Exhibit 2) as a call to action for member libraries to build policies and actions that preserve and protect democracy in their respective communities. The ULC requested member libraries to support its efforts by signing the Declaration. The Libraries Division is an active and contributing member of the ULC.

This Resolution, if adopted, will demonstrate the Board's support for the values outlined in the Declaration and for the mission of the Libraries Division.
