Summary Explanation/Background
Section 177.142, Florida Statutes, authorizes local governments to change plat names by Ordinance when a determination is made that the name of a recorded plat contains a racial or ethnic slur. The Sumter's Colored Addition to Town of Pompano Plat, the Amended Plat of Sumter's Colored Addition to Town of Pompano Plat, and the Sumter's Colored Addition to Pompano First Addition Plat are recorded at Plat Book 1, Page 11; Plat Book 1, Page 12; and Plat Book 10, Page 67, respectively, of the public records of Broward County, Florida. The proposed Ordinance finds that the names constitute a racial slur and are demeaning to racial and ethnic groups.
