Summary Explanation/Background
This item supports the Board Value, "Approaching human services collaboratively and compassionately, with special emphasis on the most vulnerable."

Broward Sheriff's Office offers a summer youth program called "Youth L.E.A.D. Camp," which stands for "Learning, Educating, and Developing." (See Exhibit 1.) The Youth L.E.A.D. Camp partners with the fraternities and sororities that compose the National Pan-Hellenic Council to offer an eight-week summer leadership program to youth aged ten to 18 who may benefit from a supportive program that provides mentoring, education, and career coaching, and develops civic responsibility and life and leadership skills.

Miami-Dade County recently expanded its investment in a program called "Fit2Lead" that targets youth already involved in the juvenile justice system and/or those who may have identified disabilities or are neurodivergent, and provides paid internships/jobs for these youth to acquire and practice skills through recreation activities and workshops that promote social, emotional, and mental health, and foster long-term academic and behavior improvement.
