Why Action is Necessary

Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections by deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes.  Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are required to appropriate LETF funds. 

 

What Action Accomplishes

Provides LETF funding in the amount of $52,439 for the City of Margate to install license plate readers along the SR-7 corridor.

Summary Explanation/Background

The Broward Sheriff’s Office supports this LETF request for License Plate Readers (LPRs) for the City of Margate.  The City of Margate intends to install fixed LPRs along the SR-7 corridor.  LPRs are a proven investigative tool that collect data.  This technology helps law enforcement be more efficient and significantly more accurate when fighting crime.

Fiscal Impact/Cost Summary

Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for this action.  According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of September 1, 2021, is $4,408,895 in the local account ($3,040,909 of which is unrestricted) and $5,008,413 in the federal account ($3,174,797 of which is unrestricted).  This action will utilize $52,439 in unrestricted federal funds.
