Summary Explanation/Background
On May 19, 2022, the Plaintiff, pedestrian Joyce Marie Champion, was struck by a Broward County Transit bus while crossing the street within the Lauderhill Transit Center. The Plaintiff alleged that she sustained traumatic injuries as a result of the negligent actions of the bus operator who sped through the bus terminal while failing to keep his eyes focused forward in the direction of travel. The Plaintiff has undergone substantial medical treatment, including three surgeries and several weeks of hospitalization. Her medical expenses, to date, are $474,335.47.
The Plaintiff has agreed to release Broward County from all claims arising from the incident in exchange for $150,000.00, which includes costs and attorneys’ fees, subject to Board approval.
