Summary Explanation/Background

Section 102.141, Florida Statutes, provides that the Mayor is a member of the Canvassing Board unless she is unable to serve or is disqualified. Disqualification includes being a candidate with opposition in the election being canvassed. The 2024 general election cycle is tentatively set for October 9 through November 18, 2024.

Because the Mayor is a candidate with opposition in the general election, she is disqualified from serving in that cycle, and the Board of County Commissioners must appoint an eligible substitute County Commissioner, under Section 102.141(1)(c), Florida Statutes.

The Mayor has the authority to appoint one or more qualified County Commissioners to serve as alternates, who would serve if another Canvassing Board member needs to miss a meeting.
