Summary Explanation/Background

In December 2025, the County engaged consultant Jensen Hughes to study the feasibility of forming a law enforcement agency to secure the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). At the January 20, 2026, workshop, the Board indicated that the study include the law enforcement needs of Port Everglades as well.

At the regular meeting on April 14, 2026 (Item No. 44), the Board directed County Administration to work with the County Attorney’s Office and to report back to the Board on the process necessary to bring the Broward County Department of Fire Rescue under the operational control of Broward County.

At the Budget Workshop on May 12, 2026, representatives from Jensen Hughes presented the Board with the feasibility study related to forming a law enforcement agency to secure Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. One week later, at the Budget Workshop on May 19, 2026, Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony addressed the Board on the Jensen Hughes’ feasibility study.

At the August 20, 2026, regular meeting, the Board discussed the necessary process for bringing the Broward County Fire Rescue Department under the operational control of Broward County. At the conclusion of the conversation, the Board voted to direct County Administration to bring this item for Board discussion and potential action at the September 22, 2026, meeting.
