Why Action is Necessary

Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes.  Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are required to appropriate LETF funds.

 

What Action Accomplishes

Provides LETF funding in the amount of $75,000 for purchasing a heavy-duty vehicle for the Strategic Investigations Division.

Summary Explanation/Background

The Strategic Investigations Division-Regional Narcotics Unit, Broward County Drug Task Force needs to purchase a heavy-duty vehicle which will be used to maintain and transport heavy equipment during investigations. Current vehicles in their inventory are not rated to transport their required weights and fleet does not currently have vehicles available to meet the needs of the unit.

Fiscal Impact/Cost Summary

Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for these actions.  According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of March 18, 2024, is $4,863,131 in the local account ($3,533,549 of which is unrestricted) and $14,013,105 in the federal account ($7,525,608 of which is unrestricted). This action will utilize a total of $75,000 of the LETF, all of which is from the restricted federal funds.
