Summary Explanation/Background
THE RESILIENT ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT (RED) AND THE ANIMAL CARE DIVISION (ACD) RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTIONS.
Motion A:
Approval of Motion A ratifies ACD’s Petco Love Grant Application and accepts the grant award. On July 21, 2023, ACD applied for the Petco Love Life Saving grant, which aims to provide funding for organizations to develop programs and projects that contribute to life-saving measures within the animal care community. ACD pursued this grant with the goal of eliminating financial obstacles for pet owners by offering free pet food, vaccinations, microchipping, behavioral training, and assistance with pet deposits.
On March 20, 2024, Petco Love awarded ACD a grant in the amount of $20,000 and indicated in the award letter that the grant funds may be used “for any lifesaving purpose.” As a requirement for receiving the grant, ACD must issue a press release using Petco Love’s template press release; use all funds for lifesaving purposes; complete all assigned follow-up grant reports in a timely manner; prominently place Petco Love Lost on ACD’s website (digital lost and found resources to facilitate reunions); and complete an Annual Data Report each year by March 31st to stay eligible for grant awards.
Motion B:
Approval of Motion B allocates the $20,000 grant award within the Animal Care Adoption Trust Fund for Fiscal Year 2024.
Motion C:
Approval of Motion C permits ACD to submit a grant application for the 2024-2025 Petco Love Animal Welfare Organization Cycle. If awarded, this grant will support several key initiatives: hosting off-site adoption events showcasing pets to potential pet owners in new venues; establishing a program to collaborate with pet-friendly housing providers to remove barriers to large dog ownership; strengthening the bond between pets and owners; reducing shelter admissions due to financial hardships; and fostering a more compassionate and responsible pet-loving community.
