Summary Explanation/Background

In November 2025, the Board of County Commissioners (“Commission”) amended the Broward County Code of Ordinances to limit the age of taxicabs operating in Broward County providing that, effective July 1, 2026, with certain exceptions, most taxicabs must either be: (1) no more than ten model years old; or (2) older than ten but no more than 15 model years old, provided that the vehicle has no more than 150,000 miles.

Taxicabs lawfully permitted and operating as of July 1, 2025, were granted a grace period to comply with the new standards. Such taxicabs may continue operating vehicles exceeding 15 model years old through June 30, 2026, and vehicles exceeding ten model years old (but not exceeding 15 years old) through June 30, 2030.

Recently, several independent taxicab owners requested additional time to comply with the vehicle age requirements for vehicles over 15 model years of age. According to figures provided by the Consumer Protection Division, almost half of taxicabs now in service are more than ten model years old, and about 16 percent are more than 15 model years old.

If enacted, this Ordinance would allow any taxicab lawfully permitted and operating as of July 1, 2025, exceeding 15 model years of age to continue operating through June 30, 2027, a one-year extension from the time permitted under the current ordinance.

Timely notice has been published in accordance with the applicable requirements to permit the Commission’s consideration of the proposed Ordinance.
