Why Action is Necessary

Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes. Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are required to appropriate LETF funds.

 

What Action Accomplishes

A. Provides LETF funding in the amount of $289,701 for Airport Active Threat Equipment.

 

B. Provides LETF funding in the amount of $81,467 for Airport Traffic and Pedestrian Equipment.

Summary Explanation/Background

A. The Broward Sheriff's Office supports this LETF request for the Airport Active Threat Equipment. The funding is being requested to purchase active threat equipment for the deputies assigned to the airport. This equipment will include ballistic shields, ballistic chest plates, and trauma skids. Equipment will be issued to all deputies assigned to the airport in the event of an active threat.

 

B. The Broward Sheriff’s Office supports this LETF request for the Airport Traffic and Pedestrian Equipment. The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is requesting the purchase of a speed trailer equipped with license plate reader (LPR) cameras which will be used during proactive traffic enforcement as a deterrent in areas where excessive speeds are a concern. The purchase of six electric bicycles will assist in deputies covering more patrol areas throughout the airport. The speed trailer equipped with LPR cameras will assist with addressing excessive vehicle speed concerns therefore keeping other travelers safe. The electric bicycles will assist deputies in covering more patrol areas throughout the airport, to ensure safety to travelers.

Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for these actions. According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of January 8, 2025, is $4,825,936 in the local account ($3,487,502 of which is unrestricted) and $13,288,765 in the federal account ($8,351,647 of which is unrestricted). Motion A, relative to Airport Active Threat Equipment, will utilize $289,700.50 of the local LETF, all of which will be from restricted funds. Motion B, relative to Airport Traffic and Pedestrian Equipment, will utilize $81,466.97 of the local LETF, all of which will be from restricted funds.
