Summary Explanation/Background
THE BROWARD COUNTY CULTURAL DIVISION AND THE BROWARD COUNTY PUBLIC ART AND DESIGN COMMITTEE RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Board’s Healthy Community Goal of cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning.
This action approves the artist and their artwork design at the Port Everglades Amman Building, 2550 Eisenhower Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316, and will result in an expenditure of not more than $218,000 for the design development, fabrication, and installation of the artwork ($200,000 for art and $18,000 for contingency). The artwork design this item approves is the jellyfish sculpture only shown in Exhibit 1. The landscaping and painted wall are not a part of the proposed artwork.
Pursuant to Section 33.43(e)(2) of the Broward County Administrative Code, the artist was selected through the limited competition selection method and considered from a pool of seven artists. The artwork design proposal, “Jellyfish” (working title), was approved by the Artist Selection Panel on April 13, 2026, the Public Art and Design Committee on April 15, 2026. Due to scheduling conflicts, the item was not able to be reviewed by Broward Cultural Council prior to the May 26 Commission meeting.
“Jellyfish” functions as a dynamic exterior sculptural artwork that enhances the outdoor environment, softens the industrial nature of the Port, and finds inspiration in the flora and fauna of the Everglades.
Exhibit 1 is the proposed design for the artwork. The artwork is a sculptural form, conceived to be seen while driving on Eisenhower Boulevard. The proposed design may vary slightly based on factors such as site conditions.
A formal agreement between Broward County and the Artist will be prepared, and the County Administrator is authorized to execute such agreement pursuant to Section 33.47 of the Broward County Administrative Code, subject to review and approval for legal sufficiency by the County Attorney’s Office.
