Summary Explanation/Background

In 2022, pursuant to Sections 1011.71 and 1011.73, Florida Statutes, and at the direction of The School Board of Broward County (“The School Board”), the Board of County Commissioners (“Commission”) called a referendum election to determine whether the electors of Broward County would approve a levy by The School Board of an additional ad valorem tax of one mill for four years for specified purposes. The electors approved the one-mill tax, which is set to expire at the end of the 2026 calendar year.

On March 10, 2026, The School Board adopted Resolution No. 26-130, requesting the Commission to call a referendum election during the November 3, 2026, General Election to determine whether the electors of Broward County would approve a levy by The School Board of an additional ad valorem tax of one mill for four years (upon expiration of the current one mill levy). A copy of Resolution No. 26-130 is attached as Attachment A to the proposed Resolution (Exhibit 1).

Pursuant to Section 1011.73(2), Florida Statutes, the Commission has a ministerial duty to place this referendum on the ballot as requested by The School Board.
