Summary Explanation/Background

This item proposes that the Board name the Stirling Road Branch Library, located at 3151 Stirling Road, Hollywood, Florida 33312 (“Library”), in honor of the late Marta-Beth Friedman.

Marta-Beth Friedman made significant contributions to the Broward County community through her humanitarian service. She was an active member of the Broward County Library Advisory Board for over 20 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the Library. She also championed early childhood literacy and education and helped to develop programs that provide family support services and subsidized childcare.

Section 18.43 of the Broward County Administrative Code (“Administrative Code”) establishes the Board’s policy for naming property, buildings, structures, or facilities. Pursuant to Section 18.43(e) of the Administrative Code, the County Administrator solicited community input for the proposed naming of the Library from the City of Hollywood, Young Israel of Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale, and Friends of the Stirling Road Branch Library. Attached as Exhibit 2 is a July 2, 2024, memorandum to the Board summarizing the input solicited and received and analyzing whether the proposed naming of the Library aligns with County policy. The letters and e-mails in support of the proposed naming received from residents, community leaders, and elected officials are attached to the July 2 memorandum.
