Summary Explanation/Background

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/REAL PROPERTY AND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

Effective July 1, 2023, a new State requirement in Section 125.379, Florida Statutes, requires Broward County to prepare, provide to the State, and make publicly available an inventory list of all real property within its jurisdiction, owned by Broward County or any dependent special district within its boundaries, that is appropriate for use as affordable housing, for review and approval by the Board, after a public hearing.  Pursuant to the Statute, approval of the inventory list by the Board requires a public hearing.

On May 21, 2024, the Board approved Agenda Item No. 21 and directed the County Administrator to publish Notice of Public Hearing to be held on June 4, 2024, and this meeting is the public hearing for approval of the inventory list.

Real Property and Real Estate Development Division conducted in-depth research to capture all County-owned properties that are suitable for use as affordable housing.  This research included coordinating with other County agencies and the dependent special districts to compile data on the parcels, determining if there was any planned use already slated for a particular parcel, and reviewing all potential parcels with County Administration.

All documents have been reviewed and approved as to form by the Office of the County Attorney.
