Why Action is Necessary

Board action is necessary to authorize the County Administrator or her designee to submit a request, application, and any required supporting materials to the State of Florida regarding the proposed renaming of Hollywood North Beach Park in honor of the late Commissioner Suzanne Gunzburger. Because the park is subject to State oversight and approval requirements, State review and approval may be necessary before the proposed name change can be processed.

What Action Accomplishes

Authorizes County staff to submit the County’s request to the State of Florida to rename Hollywood North Beach Park in honor of the late Commissioner Suzanne Gunzburger and to provide any supporting documentation required for State review and approval of the proposed name change.

Summary Explanation/Background

Hollywood North Beach Park is a public park subject to the oversight and approval requirements of the State of Florida. This item directs County staff to submit an application to the State requesting that the park be renamed in honor of the late Commissioner Suzanne Gunzburger.

Commissioner Gunzburger served Broward County with distinction for many years, including as a member of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, and was a dedicated public servant whose leadership and contributions had a lasting impact on the County and its residents. Renaming Hollywood North Beach Park in her honor would recognize her legacy of public service and her contributions to Broward County.

Section 258.004(1)(a), Florida Statutes, authorizes the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Recreation and Parks, to supervise, administer, regulate, and control the operation of certain public parks, including parks for which the State has ownership interests or has provided funding for operation, development, preservation, or maintenance. Accordingly, County staff may need to submit the proposed renaming request and any required supporting materials to the appropriate State agency for review and approval consistent with applicable State requirements.

This item does not itself rename the park. Rather, it authorizes County staff to initiate and pursue the applicable State review and approval process on behalf of Broward County.
