Summary Explanation/Background
THE PUBLIC WORKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT, THE HOUSING AND URBAN PLANNING DIVISION, AND THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
The proposed historic resource designation supports Broward County Land Use Plan Policy 2.30.1 which provides that “the Broward County Land Use Plan and local plans shall map and maintain a current list of historically, architecturally and archaeologically significant properties and address the protection of these historic resources.”
On June 18, 2026, the Historic Preservation Board (HPB) directed staff to prepare an application to designate the Hanson Farmhouse as a historic resource. The site is located at 10550 Griffin Road in the City of Cooper City. It is owned by Hanson Homestead, LLC.
Public notice was provided to the City Cooper City (City), the property owner (Owner), and public thirty days (30) prior to the scheduled HPB quasi-judicial public hearing held on September 17, 2026. The City objected to the designation in writing, citing a previous underlying site plan approval which included an agreement to have the home moved off the property within two years or be demolished. The two-year timeline expired on September 27, 2026, however pursuant to issuance of the notification provided, the property is now temporarily protected by a “Historic Designation in Progress.” Should the property be designated historic, the protection becomes permanent.
On September 17, 2026, sworn testimony was provided to the HPB by staff, the City and the Owner. The City restated its position; the Owner testified in support of the application. The HPB adopted an order recommending historic resource designation of the structure to the Board of County Commissioners.
