Summary Explanation/Background
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Board of County Commissioners' Goal of "Cooperatively delivering an efficient and accessible regional intermodal transportation network."
NW 31st Avenue is a County road within the Cities of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, and Tamarac. The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has funds to design and construct multimodal paths and sidewalks along NW 31st Avenue from Broward Boulevard to McNab Road and collaborated with Broward County and the Cities to develop the project. The project will enhance the existing pedestrian and bicycle facilities along this corridor and improve safety. Broward County will be responsible for project design, construction, and construction administration under the federally mandated Local Agency Program. Broward County will continue to own and maintain NW 31st Avenue from Broward Boulevard to McNab Road after construction of the proposed improvements. The project will be implemented with no change in the number of vehicle travel lanes.
In order to establish federal funding eligibility, the MPO requires a resolution showing support from the Board of County Commissioners. Staff from the County’s Complete Streets Team have reviewed the proposed improvements and support the implementation of the project. Approval of this Resolution (Exhibit 1) will formally affirm the County’s support for the project. The Cities have expressed their support for the project through a joint letter addressed to the County Administrator as shown in Exhibit 2. At the appropriate time in the future, staff will submit an agreement to the Board for consideration to formalize the MPO grant amount and any funding participation from the County.
The Resolution has been reviewed and approved as to form by the Office of the County Attorney.
