Summary Explanation/Background

In certain circumstances, trauma patients must be transported, as a matter of Florida law and medical necessity, to the closest trauma center. However, when transport to the closest facility is not legally or medically required, non-trauma patients should generally be permitted to identify their preferred local medical facility and request to be transported to that facility, with the patient responsible for any additional expense incurred in accommodating their facility preference.

This item, if approved, would direct the County Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with County staff, to prepare an appropriate Ordinance for future consideration by the Board requiring that the emergency medical services transport providers in Broward County appropriately consider the patient’s preference in non-trauma emergency medical transport with the patient responsible for any additional expense, subject to any appropriate legal, medical, or other limitations or exceptions.
