Summary Explanation/Background

The FIFA World Cup 2026™ will take place across multiple locations in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, including at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, during June and July 2026. Seven FIFA World Cup 2026™ matches will be played at Hard Rock Stadium, including the Bronze Final on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

The event is expected to attract tourists from around the world to Broward County and generate significant excitement within our communities. Tickets to matches are expected to cost hundreds of dollars each, placing them beyond the reach of many residents. Broward County’s municipalities have expressed an interest in hosting events to bring the community together and drive economic development during the FIFA World Cup 2026™. Allocating funds for this purpose is a deliberate economic and community development strategy that ensures that our cities, in partnership with local Broward businesses and community organizations, can host safe and relevant activities, including legacy and youth development programs. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

As described in the attached Exhibit 1, planned events include a Signature Kickoff Event on June 9 at Central Broward Regional Park, watch parties, and the promotion of local businesses and municipalities throughout Broward County during the tournament. The City of Lauderhill will lead the efforts related to the Signature Kickoff Event and collaborate with other municipalities.

If approved, this item would authorize the County Administrator to enter into an agreement with the City of Lauderhill to provide up to $250,000 to support the Signature Broward Kickoff Event described in Exhibit 1 and underwrite countywide promotion and multi-city activation related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup™.

This item is submitted after the deadline because the circumstances necessitating submission arose after the deadline. Deferral to a subsequent meeting would reduce the time available for municipal planning, potentially diminishing the value of events and activities for County residents.
