Why Action is Necessary

Florida Statutes section 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes. Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are required to appropriate LETF funds.

 

What Action Accomplishes

Provides LETF funding in the amount of $920,000 for various organizations’ crime prevention, safe neighborhood, and drug abuse education and prevention programs.

Summary Explanation/Background

Florida Statutes section 932.7055(5)(c)(3) requires that BSO expend no less than 25% of Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act proceeds within the Fiscal Year towards the support or operation of various programs for the benefit of the community. To achieve this goal, BSO has implemented a structured selection process to disburse these funds in an equitable manner to programs with significant likelihood of benefiting the community.

Fiscal Impact/Cost Summary

Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for these actions. According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of August 12, 2025, is $6,863,439 in the local account ($5,019,162 of which is unrestricted) and $16,369,614 in the federal account ($10,268,526 of which is unrestricted). This action will utilize a total of $920,000 of the LETF, all of which will be from unrestricted local funds.
