Summary Explanation/Background
THE PUBLIC WORKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND THE TRAFFIC ENGINEERING DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Broward County Board of County Commissioners’ (Board) goals of building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives and ensuring accessible, seamlessly integrated investments in sustainable practices, manufacturing, resilient infrastructure, and environmental protection.
To accommodate the need for high-speed communications for enhanced traffic control initiatives, County and the FDOT have installed and are continuing to install fiber optic cable infrastructure on roadways throughout Broward County. These initiatives are critical for the safe and efficient movement of vehicular traffic and citizens in Broward County. Some of these fiber optic cable installations are on roadways where one Party, as the owner, installed the fiber optic cable infrastructure and the other Party, as the user, needed access to that infrastructure for communications. To date, the County and FDOT had an informal arrangement regarding the shared use of fiber optic infrastructure and the responsibility to repair and maintain the shared infrastructure. This MOU (Exhibit 1 - Memorandum of Understanding) defines and memorializes the existing arrangement between Parties to share, operate, and maintain fiber optic cables, conduits, pull boxes, splice vaults, splice enclosures, splices, and other related infrastructure on various roadways within Broward County.
