Summary Explanation/Background

This item proposes that the Board name Courtroom WW11166 at the Main Courthouse, located at 201 S.E. Sixth Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301 (“Courtroom”), in honor of the late James Fox Miller.

James Fox Miller was a prominent family law attorney who litigated many cases at the Main Courthouse throughout his decades-long career. Mr. Miller made numerous significant contributions to the legal community, including serving as the President of The Florida Bar from 1990-1991 and as special counsel to The Florida Bar on various matters. He also contributed to the legal community through his various teaching roles, including teaching courses for The Florida Bar and at various law schools in Florida. Mr. Miller was also a community leader serving the Broward County community through his board and committee memberships and activism.

Section 18.43 of the Broward County Administrative Code (“Administrative Code”) establishes the Board’s policy for naming property, buildings, structures, or facilities. Pursuant to Section 18.43(e) of the Administrative Code, the County Administrator solicited community input for the proposed naming of the Courtroom from The Florida Bar, the City of Fort Lauderdale, and the Broward County Bar Association. Attached as Exhibit 3 is a July 11, 2024, memorandum to the Board summarizing the input solicited and analyzing whether the proposed naming of the Courtroom aligns with County policy.
