Summary Explanation/Background

THE HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND THE ELDERLY AND VETERANS SERVICES DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

This action supports the Commission’s value of “building strong customer relationships and delivering customer-centric solutions” and the goal of “delivering accessible human services that holistically address the whole person collaboratively and compassionately.”

The COVID-19 Emergency Meals Program provides emergency home-delivered meals to Broward County adults, age 60 and older, who are experiencing food insecurity as a direct result of sheltering in place due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19.

Broward County desires to continue to support Areawide Council on Aging of Broward County, Inc. (“Council”) to provide home-delivered meals to eligible Broward County seniors. Council has operated a COVID-19 Emergency Meals Program since the week of March 16, 2020. It has delivered over six million meals to 9,614 seniors. Broward County previously provided $18.65 million in funding for this program. Council has also supported this program with state and federal funding from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and donations from the community and private organizations.

Retroactive approval is requested due to both the Elderly and Veterans Services Division’s and the Council’s delays related to resolution of certain programmatic matters.

The Agreement (Exhibit 1) has been reviewed and approved as to form by the Office of the County Attorney.
