Summary Explanation/Background

Broward County is home to young people from many different backgrounds whose perspectives and participation are essential to the County’s continued growth and success. County policies and funded programs related to transportation, housing, economic opportunity, sustainability, technology, mental health, and workforce development directly impact young residents.

Creating a Broward County Youth Commission would establish a formal structure for youth engagement, empowering students and young residents to participate meaningfully in civic leadership, policy development, and community initiatives.

The proposed Youth Commission would advise the County Commission on issues affecting young people across Broward County. It would also promote civic participation, leadership growth, and collaboration among County government, schools, nonprofits, and other community partners.

Miami-Dade County’s Youth Commission serves as a proven model for youth involvement in local government and civic affairs. Establishing a similar body in Broward County would ensure Broward’s youth have an active, meaningful voice in shaping policies and initiatives that impact their future.

The proposed Resolution would define the Youth Commission’s purpose, membership criteria, appointment process, terms of office, roles and responsibilities, staffing support, ethics compliance, and other provisions as part of the Broward County Administrative Code.
