Summary Explanation/Background

In November 2000, as authorized by a special act, Chapter 2000-461, Laws of Florida, Broward County voters approved the creation of the Children's Services Council (CSC). The CSC's membership is comprised of eleven members. Six members serve based upon designated positions or titles, including a representative of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, and the five remaining members are appointed by the Governor.

With respect to the gubernatorial appointees, the Board is required to submit the names of at least three candidates for each vacancy to the Governor. There are a total of five vacancies. Therefore, the Board must submit the names of at least fifteen candidates to the Governor to fill the five anticipated vacancies due to the expiring terms of the current appointees.

At the January 24th, 2023, Regular Meeting, the Board chose 16 applicants as nominees for the Governor’s consideration for appointment. The names were submitted to the Governor.

Subsequently, the Governor requested a new list of candidates as authorized by 125.901(1)(a), Florida Statutes.

A public notice soliciting applications for the appointments was initiated on May 9, 2024, through the County's website and in various community bulletins, with an application submission deadline of May 24, 2024. All previous applicants were alerted via email of the requirement for a new application submission.

During the Board’s consideration of this item, Commissioners will rank the eligible applicants and at least the top 15 will be forwarded to Governor DeSantis as required by law.

The Candidate Applications will be distributed as additional material and the sample Ranking Ballot is attached as (Exhibit 1).
