Summary Explanation/Background
THE BROWARD COUNTY CULTURAL DIVISION, THE BROWARD COUNTY CULTURAL COUNCIL, AND GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU (VISIT LAUDERDALE) RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Board’s Healthy Community Goal of cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning.
A national Call to Artists for the Convention Center Public Art Project garnered 30 applications. Artist, Jeremy Jarvis, and his design proposal were approved by the Artist Selection Panel on August 17, 2023, the Public Art & Design Committee on June 12, 2024, and the Broward County Cultural Council on September 5, 2024.
Exhibit 1 is the proposed design for the artwork. The site is the west façade of the Broward County Convention Center. The proposed artwork is a hand painted mural that will be visible to both pedestrians and motorists traveling northbound and southbound on Eisenhower Boulevard. The artwork reflects the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau’s tag line “Everyone under the Sun”. The proposed design may vary slightly based on factors such as site conditions and additional agency input.
A mid-career local artist (“Allied Artist”) will serve as an apprentice to Artist Jeremy Jarvis and gain the technical and administrative expertise necessary to participate in the field of public art.
If approved, this item will approve the design proposal from the Artist for the Convention Center Project in an amount not to exceed $120,000 ($100,000 art; $10,000 contingency; $10,000 Allied Artist).
