Summary Explanation/Background

THE PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

The requested action supports the Board’s goals of cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning.

This project will provide for the funding for the design and permitting phase for an environmental resource center (the “Center”) at Deerfield Island Park in Deerfield Beach. Deerfield Island Park is a 53.3-acre island natural area bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway and the Hillsboro and Royal Palm canals. Deerfield Island Park is only accessible by boat.

The Center’s building will be approximately 3,750 square feet and will include an interior air-conditioned space for nature exhibits, student orientation, staff offices and workspaces, restroom facilities, and space for equipment storage. The Center will also include an attached outdoor classroom area of approximately 1,200 square feet that can accommodate 30 students and will serve as a transition point for student explorations.

The Resolution attached as Exhibit 1 is required by the Florida Inland Navigation District (the “District”) to be submitted with any grant application and must utilize the District’s form. The grant requires a 50% match from County in the amount of $916,050.
