Summary Explanation/Background
THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THIS ITEM.
The Transportation Department (BCT), as the agency overseeing Broward County Transit, is requesting that amendments be made to various sections of the Code and the Administrative Code to enhance the safety, security, comfort, and convenience of people using the transit system, operators of transit vehicles, and other employees working at transit facilities.
The Federal Transit Administration (“FTA”) reported that violence against transit workers has reached an all-time high. Data from the FTA’s National Transit Database indicates that the rate of assaults on transit workers increased more than 232% percent between 2014 and 2024.
To enhance safety throughout the transit system, BCT is requesting amendments to the Code and Administrative Code to modify conduct standards and associated penalties, including providing for possible suspension from the transit system based on repeated improper conduct.
