Why Action is Necessary
Section 1-88(a)(9) of the Broward County Code of Ordinances, requires that the Broward County Board of County Commissioners (“Board”) approve the artist’s design proposal when the art budget for the artwork portion of the capital improvement project total is $100,000 or more.

Summary Explanation/Background
THE BROWARD COUNTY CULTURAL DIVISION, AND THE BROWARD COUNTY CULTURAL COUNCIL RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Board's Healthy Community goal of cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning.
On December 10, 2019, (Item No. 50), Broward County and the Sheriff of Broward County executed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) for the design and construction of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Training Center. Pursuant to Article 10 of the MOU, public art will be included in the project and the selection of an artist will be administered by the Broward County Cultural Division.
A national Call to Artists for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Art Project was issued on September 14, 2022, and garnered 94 applicants. The Artist and its design proposal were approved by the Artist Selection Panel on April 27, 2023, the Public Art & Design Committee on May 10, 2023, and the Broward Cultural Council on June 1, 2023.
Exhibit 1 is the proposed design for the artwork by the Artist. The artwork consists of three sculptural elements made of stainless steel and terra cotta. Each sculptural element is 14’ high by 7’- 4” wide, with accent lighting for nighttime interest. The proposed design may vary slightly based on factors such as site conditions and additional agency input.
