Summary Explanation/Background
THE PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
The requested action supports the Board’s goals of cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning.
This project will provide for the funding for the design and permitting phase for an outdoor classroom at Deerfield Island Park in Deerfield Beach. Deerfield Island Park is a 53.3-acre island natural area bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway and the Hillsboro and Royal Palm canals. Deerfield Island is only accessible via boat.
The outdoor classroom building would be a chickee structure as these structures are part of the indigenous architecture native to South Florida. The classroom would be approximately 2,325 square feet and will have the ability to hold one full classroom, which can accommodate approximately 30 students. Included in the facility would be a teaching/instruction area (approximately 1,500 sq. ft.), an equipment storage area (approximately 150 sq. ft.), a mechanical/electrical area (approximately 375 sq. ft.), and two restrooms (approximately 150 sq. ft. each). There will also be large-scale outdoor ceiling fans to keep the air moving and make the space more pleasant for the student experience.
The Resolution attached as Exhibit 1 is required by the Florida Inland Navigation District (the “District”) to be submitted with any grant application and must utilize the District’s form. The grant requires a 50% match from County in the amount of $173,750.
