Summary Explanation/Background
Broward County is a globally connected community with strong economic, governmental, tourism, educational, and cultural ties spanning Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and other international regions. The County’s status as a key international gateway is enhanced by Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which together drive global commerce, tourism, and trade.
The proposed Broward County Sister Cities and International Partnerships Advisory Board (“Advisory Board”) would advise the Commission and offer strategic recommendations on international partnerships, cultural and educational exchanges, tourism promotion, economic development, and intergovernmental cooperation initiatives that benefit Broward County residents and businesses.
Other counties and municipalities with a Sister Cities program have advisory committees related to the program. For instance, Miami-Dade County has maintained a formal Sister Cities Program since 1981. The program is administered by Miami-Dade County’s International Trade Consortium (“ITC”). The ITC has a dedicated Sister Cities Committee. Establishing a similar advisory framework would enable Broward County to foster and coordinate international and intergovernmental partnerships more effectively.
The proposed Resolution would define the Advisory Board’s purpose, membership criteria, appointment process, terms of office, roles and responsibilities, staffing support, ethics compliance, and other provisions as part of the Broward County Administrative Code.
