Summary Explanation/Background

The Black British Heritage Celebration, scheduled to occur on October 24, 2026, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, is an awards event honoring the achievements and contributions of the local Black British community. Black History Month is observed each October in the United Kingdom and recognizes leaders and rising voices whose work has had a lasting impact on the community, media, and the arts. The Black British Heritage Celebration will feature a red-carpet reception, dinner, an awards presentation, and live entertainment. Ticket prices are $40 each (plus processing fees) and include the cost of valet parking. All ticket revenue will be used toward the cost of the event with any excess funds donated to the County General Fund for utilization by the Cultural Division.

Some of the sponsors of the event to date include JetBlue Airways Corporation and the Florida Panthers Foundation.

If approved, this item would permit the County to cosponsor the event, to accept and administer ticket revenue received by Commissioner Davis and funding provided by other sponsors, and to contribute in-kind County resources. The County-in-kind contributions would include serving as the contracting entity with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and contributing a portion of the annual allotment of rental space the County receives as consideration for its financial support of Performing Arts Center Authority operations. All costs incurred for the event would be fully funded by the District Commissioner’s budget account, event revenues, or event sponsorships.
