Summary Explanation/Background

THE PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

The requested action supports the Board’s goal of cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning.

The proposed project is the first phase in a two-phase project to build an aquarium at Anne Kolb Nature Center in West Lake Park in Hollywood, Florida (the “Project”). The Project would replace the former salt-water aquarium, a key feature since 1996, at Anne Kolb Nature Center. The aquarium was shut down in 2017 (and ultimately removed in 2022) due to leaking and corrosion. The new aquarium, ranging from 3,000 to 6,500 gallons, would be a focal point of the nature center’s exhibit hall, and would showcase a commitment to environmental compatibility through climate-resilient systems. Phase I would provide for design, engineering, and permitting for the Project.

The resolution attached as Exhibit 1 is required by the FIND to be submitted with any grant application, and is required to utilize the FIND’s form. The grant requires a 50% match from County in the amount of $278,350.
