Summary Explanation/Background

THE RESILIENT ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

Approval of this item directs the Office of the County Attorney to draft an Ordinance amending Chapter 22 ½ of the Broward County Code of Ordinances modifying sections pertaining to required acceptable methods of taxi fare payment, minimum vehicle standards, and to update terms and definitions.

These amendments will require taxi chauffeurs to accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards as forms of payment, aligning payment methods to improve convenience, security and accessibility for both drivers and passengers.  Additional safety requirements prohibiting operation of a motor vehicle with inoperative or illuminated dashboard warning lights are included to ensure safe transportation for passengers. The proposed amendments aim to align the Broward County Code of Ordinances with current industry standards and operational requirements.
