Summary Explanation/Background
In December 2025, Broward County Aviation Department engaged with the Jensen Hughes consulting company to study the feasibility of forming a law enforcement agency to secure the Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport (FLL). At the January 20th, 2026, Board workshop, the Board opined that the study should include the law enforcement needs of Port Everglades as well (PEV).
At the regular meeting on April 14th, 2026 the Board provided further direction on public safety by approving Item No. 44 on the consent agenda, directing County Administration to work with the County Attorney’s Office and report back to the Board on the process necessary to bring the Broward County Department of Fire Rescue under the operational control of Broward County.
At the Budget Workshop on May 12th, 2026, representatives from Jensen Hughes presented the Board with the feasibility study related to forming a law enforcement agency to secure Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. One week later, at the Budget Workshop on May 19th, 2026, Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony addressed the Board on the Jensen Hughes’ feasibility study.
It is anticipated that the Jensen Hughes feasibility study of forming a law enforcement agency to secure Port Everglades will be completed in time for presentation to the Board at the Budget Workshop on August 20th, 2026. Per the Motion to Direct approved at the April 14th, 2026, meeting, Exhibit 1 of this item will provide the Board with the necessary process for bringing the Broward County Fire Rescue Department under the operational control of Broward County.
