Summary Explanation/Background

The Broward County Landfill, located at 7101 SW 205th Avenue in unincorporated Broward County, is currently a contingency landfill reserved primarily for emergencies or other unplanned debris removal and disposal needs that could be required as a result of a significant hurricane or other local disaster. Currently permits have been obtained for less than all of the acreage available for landfill purposes. Due to the amount of time required to prepare the areas for landfill uses and to obtain the necessary authorizations, this item, if approved, would direct County staff to take all necessary and prudent actions to ensure sufficient, permitted landfill capacity at the Broward County Landfill is available for contingencies or other unplanned situations, including to pursue any required permitting, licensing, or other authorizations needed for such capacity.

This item is submitted after the deadline for supplemental items, because the issues presented in this item arose in connection with items on the January 28, 2025, Board agenda. Because this item relates to other items on the January 28 agenda, it is appropriate to address this item on the same agenda.
