Summary Explanation/Background

Distracted driving is a leading cause of motor vehicle crashes in the United States, contributing to thousands of injuries and fatalities each year.

Broward County has witnessed too many traffic crashes attributed to distracted driving. Florida law currently prohibits texting while driving, but the statutory prohibition against handheld use of mobile devices is currently limited to school zones, designated school crossings, and active construction work zones. The proposed Resolution, if adopted, would express the Board’s support for legislation mandating that any use of handheld mobile devices while driving be hands-free, and would direct the County Administrator to transmit copies of this Resolution to Governor DeSantis, to all Florida state legislators representing Broward County residents, and to such other local advocacy groups as the County Administrator deems advisable to demonstrate the Board’s commitment to reducing distracted driving and improving the safety of our roadways.
