Summary Explanation/Background

THE RESILIENT ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE HOUSING FINANCE DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTIONS.

This item supports the Board’s Value of Collaboration by “building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives” and the Board’s Goal of creating a Resilient Community by “ensuring accessible, seamlessly integrated investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices, manufacturing, resilient infrastructure, and environmental protection.”

The State of Florida DEM has awarded Hurricane Loss Mitigation Program (HLMP) grant funds to Broward County which facilitates the storm protections of residences owned by income eligible households at or below 80% of the Area Median Income or with a Special Needs household member. Priority will be given to eligible households in the Broward Municipal Services District (BMSD) but funds may be utilized in all communities served by the Housing Finance Division through the Minor Home Repair or Special Needs programs. HLMP funds are to be used to mitigate the homes against future hurricanes through the installation of new impact windows and doors, reroofing, installation of roof truss strapping, construction and/or hardening of roof decks, gable ends, installation of hurricane shutters, and other retrofit improvements to harden homes against future storms. Approximately ten homeowners will be assisted.

This grant will cover all costs; no matching funds are required.

The Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, Grants Section has reviewed the Agreement, and the Office of the County Attorney has approved the Agreement as to form and legal sufficiency.
