Summary Explanation/Background
In 2013, after extensive review and cooperation between the County and municipalities in Broward County, the County established a consolidated, regional E-911 system (“Regional System”) to improve public safety communications and enhance the safety of first responders, residents, and visitors throughout Broward County. The Regional System is owned and maintained by the County.
The County contracted with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (“BSO”) to operate the Regional System, including performing call-taking and dispatch services. The County’s contract with BSO to operate the regional system expired on December 31, 2022, and the parties have been unable to negotiate an extension or replacement contract. Since the contract expired, BSO has continued to operate the Regional System, with the County providing funding through the annual budget process.
This item permits the Commission to discuss potentially transferring operation of the Regional System from BSO to the County.
