Summary Explanation/Background

THE PORT EVERGLADES DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS APPROVAL.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) was awarded $337,500 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the Fiscal Year 2018 Port Security Grant Program to purchase a new supply of 1% x 3% firefighting foam for petroleum and marine firefighting at Port Everglades. As part of the grant agreement with FEMA, BSO is responsible for a 25% cost match of the total $450,000 project cost, or $112,500. Since this specialized foam is only needed to fight fires at Port Everglades, the Port Everglades Department has agreed to reimburse BSO for the 25% cost share in an amount up to $112,500. BSO anticipates purchasing up to 12,000 gallons of foam concentrate with the grant funds.

The purchase of 1% x 3% firefighting foam will upgrade the current foam supply at the Port. This new foam concentrate will allow less foam to be used for the suppression of a petroleum or marine fire using the same volume of water, thus increasing the total amount of foam available to suppress such fires.
