Summary Explanation/Background
THE HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND OFFICE OF EQUITY AND COMMUNITY INVESTMENT RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE ACTIONS.
These actions support the commission value of: "approaching human services collaboratively and compassionately with special emphasis on the most vulnerable," and the commission goal to "deliver evidence-based services to the public and connect customers and their family members to sustainable support with special emphasis on financial supports”.
The purpose of Grand Canyon University’s practicum is to provide undergraduate and graduate clinical students the opportunity to obtain clinical experience in counseling in a professional setting.
The purpose of Florida State University College of Nursing’s Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (DNP), Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (DNP), and Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP) experiential placement programs are to provide for the real-world training of students who require clinical experience in patient care.
The purpose of Florida State University College of Social Work’s internship program is to provide learning experiences for students and to train students who require clinical experience in a professional setting.
All three Agreements will provide students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills in the Human Services field, integrate the theories and practices learned in and out of the classroom, develop a commitment to the profession, and understand the diversity of the Broward community and the role diversity plays in the delivery of human services. Undergraduate and graduate students will be placed within Human Service Department’s USPP to receive experience through providing direct services under the supervision of Human Services Department staff.
Entering into the Agreements with Grand Canyon University, Florida State University College of Nursing and Florida State University College of Social Work provides a mutually beneficial relationship to the County and USPP participants. The USPP participants will enhance service capacity within the Human Services Department; in return, the USPP participants will receive supervised and self-directed real-world learning opportunities. Human Services Department is committed to helping position Broward County as an employer of choice within the human services profession. A primary goal of the USPP is to identify qualified USPP participants for opportunities to compete for employment with Human Services Department subsequent to graduation.
Agreements have been approved as to form by the Risk Management Division and Office of County Attorney.
