Summary Explanation/Background
THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT/TRANSIT DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTIONS.

This item supports the Board's Vision, Values & Goals for "Cooperatively delivering an efficient and effective regional intermodal system" and "Consistently delivering responsive, efficient, quality services to the public and internal customers."

The Wi-Fi system used to automate data transfers to and from BCT's fleet of buses at both the Copans and Ravenswood Transit facilities currently utilizes a legacy technology called Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). This WiMAX technology is being phased out industry wide and replaced by newer wireless technologies. The current WiMAX system is also not compatible with the technology on new incoming Transit buses (147). The enhancement of the facility Wi-Fi technology will improve the capability, reliability and speed of critical data transfers and will also improve network coverage at BCT Transit facilities. These critical data transfers include on-board security camera footage, vehicle maintenance information, and fare box information, etc., The infrastructure required to transition in the newer wireless equipment and technology will be installed at the two facilities and will be fund...
