Summary Explanation/Background

Over the past several months, Commissioner Furr’s office has worked with Broward County Public Communications department to craft a Student Volunteer Brochure (Exhibit 1). This Brochure features volunteer opportunities available to high school students throughout various Broward County departments. For example, the Brochure includes information on fostering an animal or volunteering at Broward County Libraries or serving as an Ambassador at our airport - all of these are fulfilling service opportunities that should be advertised to high school students looking to complete their service hour requirements. The Brochure is laid out in an accessible way with contact information for each department and a copy of the form required for students to fill out prior to receiving service hours.

All Broward County public high school students are required to log 120 volunteer service hours in order to graduate. Many of these students struggle to find appropriate opportunities that are fulfilling and accessible. Here at Broward County government, our departments feature plentiful exciting opportunities for students to serve their community. This Student Volunteer Brochure will help identify ways to volunteer that help them meet their service hours requirement while doing good for their community.

Currently, Commissioner Furr has worked to print 3,000 copies to distribute at three high schools within District Six. The intent of this item is to present this idea to the County Commission as a whole and determine if there is interest in bringing this Brochure into schools throughout every County Commission district.
