Summary Explanation/Background

To facilitate voter turnout for the 2020 elections, this item would waive bus fares and paratransit fares for voters travelling to or from a polling location on the last Saturday of early voting and on election day for the 2020 Presidential Preference Primary Election, the 2020 Primary Election, and the 2020 General Election (expected dates are March 14, March 17, August 15, August 18, October 31, and November 3, 2020).

Section 41.01 of the Broward County Administrative Code (“Administrative Code”) outlines the fixed-route bus fare structure for Broward County Transit, and Section 41.04 of the Administrative Code states the paratransit fare structure.  Bus fares and paratransit fares outlined in the Administrative Code are established and revised by Resolution of the Board amending the Administrative Code.  Since the Board is waiving bus fares and paratransit for six days, the waiver can be accomplished by Resolution and no amendment to the Administrative Code is required.
