Summary Explanation/Background

This Resolution proposes an amendment to the Broward County Charter that, to become effective, must be approved by the Broward County electorate during the 2020 General Election. The proposal would, if approved, establish the Broward County Mayor as a Charter Office elected countywide beginning in November 2022. The Mayor would have a salary of $250,000 (subsequently adjusted for inflation), be limited to three consecutive four-year terms and be prohibited from holding outside employment. The duties and obligations of the Mayor stated in the current Charter would be otherwise unchanged.

Pursuant to Section 11.07 of the Broward County Charter, the County Auditor will supply a 75-word financial impact statement estimating the increase or decrease in revenues or costs to the County resulting from approval of this proposed Charter amendment.

Six affirmative votes are required to pass this item.
