Summary Explanation/Background
This item addresses the Commission’s stated vision of creating a sustainable system of world-class intermodal transportation, infrastructure, quality human services, public safety, affordable housing, recreation, arts and culture, complementing and balancing our natural resources and environment.
The item also furthers the Commission’s value of cultivating community, arts, recreation and life-long learning.
This action is for approval of the proposed functionally integrated artwork design, in an amount not to exceed $220,000 (estimated amount of $200,0000 for art and $20,000 for contingency).
Exhibit 1 is the proposed design for functionally integrated artwork by the artist Manuel DiRita (aka Peeta) for the new five-story Northport (Heron) Parking Garage located at the intersection of Eisenhower Boulevard and SW 20th Street. The proposed artwork will be a hand painted mural depicting a heron and have a three-dimensional, illusionary, quality. The mural will assist with identifying the parking garage, wayfinding, and will be viewable by Port visitors and visitors to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center.
Mr. DiRita’s 70-feet, high design will interact with the surrounding environment, creating a visual dialogue between nature and the built environment. The proposed design may vary slightly based on a number of factors including final site conditions and agency input.
The artist and his design proposal were approved by the Public Art & Design (PAD) Committee on April 8, 2020 and the Broward Cultural Council (BCC) Executive Committee on April 16, 2020.
