Summary Explanation/Background
A. The Broward Sheriff’s Office supports this LETF request for $1,162,066 to fund the Broward County Forfeiture Unit. Funding for this program is shared by local forfeiture and the Federal Justice Law Enforcement Trust Fund.
B. The Broward Sheriff’s Office supports this LETF request for $326,575 to fund the Broward County Juvenile Firesetter Prevention and Intervention Program. Funding for this program is shared by the Pay Telephone Trust Fund and the Law Enforcement Trust Fund. Broward County’s Juvenile Firesetter Prevention and Intervention programs provide specialized fire safety education for children ages 2 to 17 and targets at-risk children and teens with an interest in or a history of starting fires, initiating bomb threats, creating destructive incendiary devices, or pulling fire alarms. By offering fire safety education instruction and community outreach presentations, the program helps reduce incidents of injury, property loss, and death. Follow-up surveys and a six-month monitoring process complete the program which has proven highly successful in reducing recidivism.
C. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) supports this LETF request for matching funds for the Port Security Grant Program - Grants Fiscal Year 2020 (Project Period 9/1/20-8/31/23). BSO received a Port Security Grant from FEMA to fund projects including the purchase of Radiological-Nuclear (rad-nuc) Detection and Identification devices. The additional of rad-nuc devices will enhance BSO’s comprehensive Preventative Rad-Nuc Detection Program implemented in 2017 so BSO can implement a layered defense to secure against radiological or nuclear terrorist attacks. FEMA requires grantees to provide 25% matching funds from a non-federal source.
