Summary Explanation/Background
This agenda item supports the Board Value, “Encouraging investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices and environmental protection,” and the Board Goal, “Increase water quality protection efforts and lead creative approaches to water storage and aquifer recharge, as well as diversification of water suppliers, regionally.”
The County Coalition for Responsible Management of Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Estuaries, and Lake Worth Lagoon (“Coalition”) was formed in 2000 to address health and welfare of the lakes, estuaries, and riverine systems consisting of Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Estuaries, and Lake Worth Lagoon, and all of the bodies of water connected thereto. The Coalition currently includes representatives of Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Martin, Okeechobee, Osceola, Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Charlotte, and Collier counties. In accordance with the Coalition’s bylaws, additional counties may nominate a representative who may then be appointed by vote of a majority of the Coalition members.
The South Florida Ecosystem encompasses more than 26,000 square miles and the 19 southernmost counties in Florida, including Broward County. Broward County and the other 18 counties depend heavily on the health of the South Florida Ecosystem. This agenda item, if approved, would nominate Commissioner Barbara Sharief as the representative for Broward County on the Coalition and enable Broward County to take its place alongside other members of the South Florida Ecosystem in the critical task of supporting the responsible management of the region’s water resources.
